I was sitting in a conference last Friday. She was the last speaker of the day. The event was the Australian Communities Forum and Annie Crawford from ‘Can Too’ was the final speaker.
She was talking about building community through a grassroots movement. Can Too is a charity that prepares people for endurance events, through providing weekly training sessions, working toward participating in a major event. Yes, I said ‘endurance’.
As Annie spoke about leadership, community and inclusivity all I could hear inside my head was “you know you have to do this”. Sometimes when we are facing challenges, whether they are person or professional, the best thing to do is get outside of the proverbial comfort zone and face the seemingly impossible.
As I thought about it over the weekend I decided to do it, and told my husband, who duly decided to join me with informal training and for the event. By Sunday night I was getting cold feet, talking myself out of it, as is often my habit. Then I remembered why I needed to do this…
1. Cure Cancer: I have my own personal cancer story, which I will share in the coming weeks. Cure Cancer supports innovative young researchers working across all areas of cancer in their quest to find a cure. My fundraising target is $1250.
2. Do something different: Have you ever thought in life that sometimes you need a kickstart? This is how I am feeling at the moment.
3. Challenge – Persevere – Complete: The more I thought about this, the more these three words kept resonating.
Take up the challenge that has been presented to me.
Persevere through the journey to the goal. Not give up or make excuses.
And complete. Finish this thing!
I will be participating in the Great Sydney Swim on Sunday 26 January, 2014
Over the next 10 weeks I will be sharing my journey. I will be tweeting with #ChallengePersevereComplete and sharing pictures on Instagram, and posting blog updates. My fundraising page is Stroke-by-Stroke.
I would appreciate your encouragement – but also your generosity. Cancer needs a cure.
